Installing HL2 Weapon Skins

It is necessary to have started the game up at least once before attempting to install a skin!

Step #1:
Download a nice HL2 weapon skin, from the HL2 skin section!

Step #2:
Once you have chosen a skin, click on it. then click "Download". Choose a mirror, and save the file to your desktop.

Step #3:
If you do not already have WinRAR, download it! Then extract the contents of the skin archive to your desktop.

Step #4:
Navigate your way into this folder:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\half-life 2\hl2\

Step #5:
On your desktop (depending on the skin), you should see the extracted contents of your skin. There should be folders named "Materials", "Models", and sometimes "Sound" and "Scripts". Match up these folders with the ones in your HL2 folder that we went into in step #4. It WILL ask you if you want to replace... say YES!

Step #6:
Activate Half-Life:2, and gaze upon your newly installed skin!

I think this needs to be updated again, because Valve changed the layout again. Please.

This is great for weapon skins.

But how would one do this for model skins?

question, i did this exactly, but there are missing textures on only SOME of the geometry of the skin (ie: on small areas, like part of the grenade launcher on the f2000 skin)

Installing skins for HL2 EP2 seems to be more difficult compared to HL2 and EP1.

    • HL2: You just install into the "hl2" folder

    • EP1: You install into the "episodic" folder.

    • HL2 EP2: Skin seems to appear independent of your installation folder ("ep2", "episodic"). I tried installing a skin for EP2, but when I extract the folders into the "episodic" folder, you can't hear the dialogue coming from the characters within the game. It seems that the issue is with the "scripts", because once you remove the "scripts" folder the character dialogues are restored, except the sounds for the skin are back to the default sounds. For HL2 and EP1, the scripts are actually in your HL2 and EP1 directory under "weapons" outside of the "hl2", "episodic", or "ep2" folder. I'll do the same for EP2 and see how it goes.

EDIT I tried messing around with EP2 some more, and the best thing to do is to install the files into the "episodic" folder if you want the characters to speak again, but the drawback is that there's no sound for your new skin. Installing it into the "ep2" folder allows the skin to function properly, but the only drawback is that there's no dialogue coming from the characters. If someone has a solution, then I'm all ears.

@Solidfreak You need to put it in C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/hl2/materials/models/weapons/v_hand. It will ask you to replace the hands, say YES!

Do what is right and not easy.

I got a bunch of weapon skins, but I downloaded a Hand skin, I placed it in the hl2 folder, and it still doesn't appear. Perhaps the skin is broken?
